“The traditional way of providing financial services needs to be disrupted,” says Chia Hock Lai, the co-founder, and CEO of Switchnovate, a FinTech and Blockchain consultancy firm, who invests in GEMS and LABS x Arena Esports Hotel Joint Venture. “Blockchain and Fintech are really about financial inclusion, making technologies and financial services more accessible to people.”
Chia, the former and Founding President for the Singapore FinTech Association and currently the co-chairman for the Blockchain Association Singapore and co-founder for the Global Fintech Institute, has more than two decades of experience in the financial and technology industry, working previously for the Government Technology Agency of Singapore and NTUC Income.
“I think GameFi is a very important driver of blockchain adoption this year and in the future. And GEMS is a very interesting space being an aggregator and also an online-to-offline place. I think it has a lot of potential,” Chia said.
Chia sees the great potential in emerging economies like Southeast Asia. “Countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, they have easily more than 100 million population in each country. Just look at the 260 million population in Indonesia and five million new babies every year,” Chia said. He believes this is the region that will benefit a lot from Fintech and Blockchain technologies.
“My main objective is to catalyze the further growth of the GameFi and metaverse industry in Singapore, where I think is in a very good position to be the heart for all these activities,” Chia said. Investing in GEMS, he believes, will bring him closer to the objective. “The big thing for GEMS when it is launched is to announce more gaming partners so that more physical locations will be available. I’m looking forward to it,” Chia said.
