This week, we are covering the M in Gems, The Metaverse. The Metaverse is the concept of a 3D, online space where people can connect their real-world and digital lives. Meta means “behind or beyond” and verse, of course, comes from the term “universe”. It usually describes a fictional world when morphed with something else i.e. Twitterverse. Pretty much, it’s a created world that is beyond our own.
One of the most common examples of Metaverse, is the game, and games similar to, Second Life. Another example is virtually trying on glasses or a style through apps to see if you can pull it off before buying. So as you can see, the idea isn’t too sus for us to ride with.

Overall, there has been a major increase in interest in the Metaverse, which has contributed to play-to-earn growth. Sparked by mainstream announcements/ changes (i.e Facebook turning into Meta), the metaverse has become the latest trending topic. This is super obvious through the industry’s developments. Virtual world games, which are tight to the metaverse concept, have generated over $78.2 million in 12,550 sales just partway through November- a 170% and 30% increase respectively from the end of October.
This isn’t just a U.S. trend as blockchain metaverses and play-to-earn were two of the hottest topics in the Asia region, growing 33% each month while reaching 1.7 million mentions across Asian media outlets. Its Asian presence is becoming more prominent with India, Singapore, and Indonesia, increasing their audience by 500%.
